Worthing Railway Station Enhanced with Community Art Project

A community art project has transformed the approach to Worthing railway station with the installation of four mosaic roundels, created by local residents. The initiative is part of the Worthing Growth Programme, a collaboration between West Sussex County Council and Worthing Borough Council aimed at improving public spaces in the town.
The Railway Approach partnership scheme, supported by Govia Thameslink Railway, has focused on enhancing accessibility and safety around the station, with upgrades including improved walking and cycling routes and newly planted green areas. As part of this initiative, the council commissioned Artyface Community Art, alongside ceramics artist Alice Mara, to lead community workshops where local residents designed and handcrafted tiles for the mosaics.
Drawing inspiration from Worthing’s history, coastal identity, and Southern Railway’s colours, the roundels celebrate the town’s heritage. Artyface founder Maud Milton highlighted the personal connections embedded in the artwork, with residents incorporating meaningful items such as jewellery and toys into the tiles. The project contributes to the ongoing £12 million Worthing Public Realm Improvements initiative, enhancing the link between the station, the seafront, and key locations within the town.
