Worthing Samaritans Reach Out to Rail Passengers
A team from Worthing Samaritans spent two hours at Littlehampton Train station yesterday (24th October) chatting to passengers as they waited on the platform or disembarked from incoming trains. The team were accompanied by representatives from British Transport Police and Worthing’s Town Crier, Bob Smytherman.
Rail Outreach Team Leader, Geoff Goodyer, commented, “the object of the exercise is outreach, to get the message of Samaritans out to customers by way of leaflets. We have all sorts of gifts, too – teabags, coffee, pens, pencils and biscuits, which are very popular. We try to get as many leaflets in as many hands as possible. If just one person reads it, and it stops them taking their own life, it is a good thing”. One leaflet also offered tips on how to open a conversation with someone who needs to talk.
Worthing Samaritans visit local railway stations several times a year. The charity has been running for over 50 years, and offers support to callers by phone and email.
