Worthing Sees 168% Increase in New Housing Targets

Worthing Borough Council’s housing target has increased by 168% as part of the government’s efforts to tackle the housing crisis.

The UK government has unveiled ambitious new housing targets to address the national housing shortage and meet Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s goal of building 1.5 million homes over the next five years. Worthing Borough Council’s target has surged from 322 to 862 new homes, representing a 168% increase in local housing development expectations.

During a visit to a construction site, Sir Keir Starmer emphasised the importance of accelerating housing projects. “For years, we have had not enough houses being built. That means individuals and families don’t have the security they want,” he said, adding that prioritising housing is essential even while balancing environmental concerns.

Councils, including Worthing Borough Council, are being encouraged to utilise high-quality green belt land for development if brownfield and grey belt land supplies are insufficient.
