Worthing Station Gateway Transformed by £3 Million Public Realm Investment

Significant enhancements have been completed around Worthing Railway Station, following a multi-million pound investment aimed at improving pedestrian and cycle access, public safety and urban greening.

The redevelopment of Railway Approach and Cross Street has been delivered by West Sussex County Council in partnership with Worthing Borough Council, Active Travel England and local contractors. Designed to support the town’s growth, the upgrades include wider footways, new pedestrian crossings, contraflow cycling routes, raised junctions, enhanced lighting and CCTV, along with better mobile connectivity. The scheme forms part of the broader £12 million Worthing Public Realm Improvement programme.

In a move to make the station area greener and more inviting, 16 new trees and rain gardens have been added to boost drainage and biodiversity. These features support native plant species and attract local wildlife, creating a more sustainable urban environment. Outdoor seating has also been introduced, and a newly paved entrance to the station was constructed alongside plans to repaint handrails and further enhance the area’s appearance.

The project, funded by West Sussex County Council and the Local Enterprise Partnership Coast2Capital, includes £3 million for Railway Approach and £165,000 for Cross Street from the Department for Transport’s Active Travel Fund. A strong focus was placed on sustainability throughout construction, with the reuse and recycling of paving and asphalt materials helping to reduce carbon emissions. Local community members also contributed to the station’s new look through the creation of mosaic artwork.
