Worthing to Revisit 20mph Speed Limit Zones
Worthing Borough Council has announced plans to explore the reintroduction of 20mph speed limits in specific areas of the town to enhance road safety and environmental quality.
The initiative, led by Council Leader Beccy Cooper, aims to engage with residents on the potential implementation in selected zones, focusing on improving conditions for pedestrians, cyclists, and vulnerable groups.
A similar proposal faced significant public resistance in 2014, , with nearly 70% of respondents opposing the move, leading to its abandonment.
However, the current proposal intends to use the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan to identify and trial lower speed limits around critical areas such as schools, parks, and green spaces.
The plan includes additional measures like enhanced pedestrian crossings and tactile paving to support safer and more accessible local travel.
Opposition leader Kevin Jenkins has cautioned that any new speed limit zones must be proportionate and well-targeted.
