Worthing to Welcome New £3m Green Space in Seaside Revival
Two years after spending £23,000 on ‘wiggly white lines’ that divided public opinion in Worthing, plans for a £3 million transformation of Montague Place into a green, biodiverse area have been unveiled.
The initiative aims to replace the controversial street art with a welcoming and environmentally friendly space inspired by historical gardens, enhancing the seaside town’s attractiveness and community engagement.
Adur & Worthing Councils’ proposals include the introduction of 30 new trees, drought-resistant plants, accessible pathways, and areas dedicated to café culture, aimed at bolstering local business and leisure activities. The new green space is designed to be a lively social hub, featuring a Worthing place sign, a green living wall, and a performance area to entertain residents and visitors alike.
The redevelopment, set to start this autumn and unfold over 15-18 months, is funded by the Community Infrastructure Levy Strategic Fund and seeks approval for further enhancements, such as a new play area celebrating Worthing’s seaside heritage and a repositioned Marine Parade road crossing to ensure seamless access to the sea. Officials express optimism that Montague Gardens will rejuvenate Worthing’s town centre, supporting the local economy and providing a versatile outdoor space for enjoyment and socialization.
